Buy Nothing Day

Writer's picture: Cindy ChanCindy Chan

Every year in November, people look for bargains on Black Friday. But did you know that the same day is also Buy Nothing Day, an international day of protest against consumerism. It is celebrated in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, and many more. It aims to raise awareness of the negative environmental, social, and political consequences of overconsumption.

The simplest way to celebrate is to avoid making any purchases on the day. No fast fashion, no quick trips to the grocery store, no online purchases, etc. Doing good for others is going to make you feel a whole lot better than buying stuff just because it's on sale. If it is a ritual for you to shop on Black Friday, find a small business in the local community or an enterprise with a social mission.

Buy Nothing Day was founded in Vancouver, Canada, in 1992 by artist Ted Dave.
