June is Filipino Heritage Month in Canada.
In October 2018, the Canadian House of Commons officially designated the month of June as Filipino Heritage Month across the country. Canada is home to nearly one million people of Filipino descent, one of the fastest growing communities in the country. Filipinos in Canada numbered around 901,218 in April, 2018, comprising a mix of naturalized Canadians, permanent residents and temporary foreign workers (TFWs). This number comprises almost 2.6% of Canada’s national population.
This month and beyond, let us recognize communities of Filipino descent and celebrate the important role they have played and continue to play in creating an open, diverse, and consciously more inclusive society.
The “Filipino Heritage Month” emblem, shown above, is owned by the Filipino Heritage Month Council-FHMC. It was designed by Filipino Canadian Joy Panjaitan in May 2018 after a competition organized by the FHMC in cooperation with Rise Tribe.
